TIPSTARS analysis methodology
TIPSTARS is designed to compare tipsters using a consistent, transparent and auditable set of hypothetical staking rules.
The dataset
Public analysis is based on selections actually submitted to TIPSTARS competitions. We retain the recorded sport, event, selection, market, odds, bookmaker, stake and settlement information where available.
P&L
A winning selection returns the profit implied by its recorded decimal odds and hypothetical stake. A losing selection loses the stake. Each-way placed selections use the recorded place fraction. Stored settlement P&L is used when available.
ROI
ROI is realised P&L divided by the total settled stake. Pending and void selections do not contribute to realised performance.
Sample size
ROI can be misleading when a tipster or sport has only a handful of results. TIPSTARS therefore displays settled-tip counts alongside performance and uses minimum-sample views where appropriate.
No hindsight editing
The analysis is based on the selections recorded by TIPSTARS. The purpose is to preserve a track record that can be inspected rather than publishing retrospective 'winning tips' without the losing selections.
What the data does not prove
Historical performance is not evidence of future profitability. A positive ROI can result from variance, a small sample or changing market conditions. TIPSTARS does not claim that a tipster will repeat past performance.
